Alternate Lifeforms

with Kokoschka Revival and Thanos Zakopoulos

The exhibition ALTERNATE LIFEFORMS organised by CTRLZAK Studio questions the notion of ‘living’ by examining the infinite possible definitions of the concept of ‘life’. The video installation by the Kokoschka Revival collective, in collaboration with artist Thanos Zakopoulos, explores this notion beyond the anthropocentric concept of ‘life’ to reveal the complex intra-actions that occur between inanimate structures and micro-organisms. The installation consists of six wall screens. The videos show unusual life forms such as organisms living in the depths of the ocean, single-celled microorganisms, bacteria and inorganic systems. The six videos are controlled by a synchronised system to create a single visual tableau. This strategy allows for a kind of polyphony that highlights the trajectories in space of these organisms, creating a perceptual illusion of movement between screens. Within this framework, the treatment of the image aims to enhance the fictitious and anti-naturalistic dimension of these ecosystems by questioning the fact that ‘life’ is an exclusively human property. The real-time sonification of the image data (amount of movement, colour) also makes it possible to emphasise the ‘agentic’ dimension of these ‘alternative’ forms of life, whose vitality is also manifested acoustically. In this sense, the sound dimension reinforces the immersive and narrative dimension of the visual dramaturgy.
